Health Academy

The Health Academy is a grant-funded program that combines college preparatory academic classes with health career exploration and job skills.  There are many advantages to our program, including numerous field trips, job shadowing for juniors, after-school tutoring, and community service opportunities. Some seniors complete a four-week paid internship at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital called the Summer Health Institute. Academy students take all of the classes necessary to graduate from high school and to enroll in a college or university.  In addition, they have many experiences in the health field that enable them to make a more informed career choice.  We work together with the Regional Occupation Program to offer courses that prepare students in specific areas, such as Dental Careers, Physical Therapy Aide, Foundations of Nursing, Sports Medicine, and Medical Assisting. Academy students take some of their classes together with other academy students, while other classes are taken with the general student population.  We enroll 60-70 students at each grade level, more than half of which are at risk for not graduating from high school based on criteria established by the California Partnership Academy program.
